About Nordlicht Kennels, LLC

A Responsible, Scientific, and Mathematical Approach to Breeding

Nordlicht Kennels, LLC was established in 2019. While new to German Shorthaired Pointer breeding, we have been enjoying this intelligent and energetic breed since 2008.  Our initial focus with this breed was through rescue support in both Ohio and the Mid-Atlantic region. In 2016, we decided to become involved with the American Kennel Club world of competition through our first GSP puppy, Cane Bello Aurora Goddess of the Dawn (a.k.a. Aurora).  We started off in the confirmation ring and then quickly became exposed to the other fun events AKC had to offer.  We focused our initial training and competitions on Rally, earning our Novice title and are continuing to work on our Rally Intermediate title, and earning our Canine Good Citizenship and Canine Good Citizenship Advanced titles.  Aurora has been so much fun to train and partner with in these events that we have decided to make her the foundational bitch of our breeding program.

All our work with the breed rescues has made us very sensitive to life's unexpected changes and as such, every puppy bred by us will always be a part of our GSP family and so will you as new puppy parents.  Our responsible breeding philosophy is focused on the following:

  • Ensuring puppies are going to caring forever homes.

  • Ensuring puppies are well balanced and socialized during the early stages of life.

  • Providing a support network to all puppy parents through the establishment of litter pages and sharing of tips and tricks to help with housebreaking, socialization, basic obedience, crate training, etc.

  • In the event that life throws you a curve ball, support in finding a new forever home for the dog.

So why the scientific approach?  As we began researching breeding philosophies, searching for quality stud dog possibilities for Aurora, and learning about breeding in general, we stumbled across published research on the coefficient of inbreeding.  As a trained Molecular Biologist, understanding the genetics of the breed and the need to maintain and control genetic diversity is key.  Through this research we found the "Wright's Inbreeding Coefficient." This coefficient helps determine the number and location of common ancestors in the pedigree.  Based upon this, all of our planned litters will not have an inbreeding coefficient that exceeds 6% when going back 5 generations in the pedigree or 9% when going back 10 generations in the pedigree.  Our sensitivity to the genetic diversity is aimed at preventing breed issues through ensuring the genetic diversity necessary to breed for conformation correctness.
